Members of the First Presbyterian Church founded the Presbyterian Community Preschool in 1963. It is a non-profit, non-sectarian preschool, governed by a board of elected members who serve three-year terms. The Board is responsible to First United Presbyterian Church's Session and follows a Constitution and Bylaws.

October 16, 2020

Dear Preschool families,

What a challenging year 2020 has been, especially dealing with the unknown from this pandemic. I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and being safe.

This school year, the Presbyterian Community Preschool Board has had many difficult decisions to make to protect the health and safety of the students, their families, our staff, and church members. The Board continues to recognize all the unusual circumstances families have encountered from the effects of the COVID 19 virus.

Keeping lines of communication open with our families is very important. When we thought there was a possibility of opening in January 2021, families were contacted to find out if they would commit their registered children to attend Preschool starting in January 2021. The teachers found that the commitment was less than 50%. Understandably, some parents had made the decision to enroll their children in other programs when the Preschool did not open in August.

The Preschool Board met this past Sunday evening and discussed the low number of committed students. Board members looked at the normal school operating expenses and then estimated the extra expenses required to meet the State of Illinois COVID 19 mandatory regulations for schools. After much discussion, the Board made the difficult decision that it was not financially feasible to reopen the Preschool in January 2021. The Board also voted to return all registration and supply fees to families.

Even as I write this letter with much sadness, I assure you the Preschool Board is looking toward to the future and is committed to opening for the 2021-2022 school year. Work has already begun on a new, updated website, and registration will begin after the first of the year. We will keep you posted along the way!

Thank you for the faith you have placed in our Preschool to nurture your children and to provide a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment! The Board and teaching staff look forward to serving you and your family in 2021, and we pray that your family stays healthy and safe. Please contact me if you have any questions.
