STEPHEN MINISTRY

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28).

“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2).

Who and What are Stephen Ministers?

Stephen Ministers are lay members of our congregation who receive 50 hours of unique caregiving training providing them the skills to minister to people experiencing a crisis, facing a challenge, or simply going through a tough time. God never intended for us to go through these experiences alone. That’s why God has brought us together as a congregation – and why FUPC has been a Stephen Ministry congregation since 1987. Our Stephen Ministers listen, pray, and accompany their care receivers through the most difficult times in their lives. Stephen Ministry is an effective and proven caring tool at First United and is viewed as a legitimate extension of the pastoral care provided by the professional ministerial staff.

What do Stephen Ministers Do?

When someone in need requests a Stephen Minister, the Stephen Leader will assign them a Stephen Minister who most likely fits their needs. Once the assignment is made, the Stephen Minister will meet with you – privately and confidentially – on a weekly basis to listen, care support, and remind you of Christ’s presence in your life. This is the calling of every Stephen Minister – To walk beside you through your struggle. When the last person has left, when you are recuperating at home, when you feel at the end of your rope, when you are grieving a loss, or when you are experiencing any of a multitude of trying circumstances, your Stephen Minister will be there as for as long as it takes. You will NOT be alone.
