Members of the First Presbyterian Church founded the Presbyterian Community Preschool in 1963. It is a non-profit, non-sectarian preschool, governed by a board of elected members who serve three-year terms and the Preschool Director, Janice Dorris. The Board is responsible to
the church's Session and follows a Constitution and By-laws.
PURPOSE AND GOALS
The Presbyterian Community Preschool is designed to provide a safe, supportive, stimulating environment, using basic Christian concepts to meet the needs of young children and their families. Its basic purpose is to complement and supplement the efforts of parents during a crucial and formative period of their child's life by providing a positive, caring and individualized preschool experience.
Our goals are:
1. To know and care about each child, to build on each child's strengths, to give encouragement
when needed.
2. To stimulate educational interests and curiosity that will carry on through the child's life.
3. To foster self-reliance and independence yet place emphasis on socialization.
4. To teach children to utilize their resources and abilities in varied situations.
5. To increase the child's compentencies in all areas: cognitive, creative, social, emotional
and physical.

CURRICULUM
Presbyterian Community Preschool offers an experience-based curriculum emphasizing a developmental approach to learning with the child as the central participant. The curriculum is aligned with the Illinois State Early Learning Standards. The content areas stressed are: language development, motor development, music, dramatic play, science, mathematics, art and social development.
Self-directed play will provide opportunities to play with blocks and cars, pretend in the family living area, woodwork, easel paint, participate in art and craft activities, water play, manipulate Play-Doh, look at books, listen to records or tape recordings, and play with a wide variety of puzzles, beads and other manipulative toys.
Group times will include some of the following: stories, conversation, songs, rhythm instruments, finger-plays, rhymes, dramatic story interpretations, puppet plays, learning games, science experiments, and learning new procedures such as woodworking, art activities and cooking projects.
There will be opportunities every day for the development of large muscle coordination. When
the weather is favorable, children play on the outside playground equipment and riding toys. On rainy, snowy, muddy or excessively cold days, children have a variety of inside play equipment
for use in the gymnasium.
Learning will come through participation in activities children enjoy. Some of the instructional concepts this year include shape and color recognition, number recognition, counting sequence, letter and name recognition, left to right orientation, simple science, nature study, health, math and social studies concepts.
There will be experiences and activities each day which will encourage children's development of a good self-concept as each child becomes increasingly independent and self-confident. Each day will provide many opportunities for social and emotional growth as children interact with other children and adults in a new environment.
